House in Yarm

residential / extension / reconfiguration

We were approached by a couple who had recently moved to a house located in Yarm, North Yorkshire. The house had been reconfigured and extended over the years, with a large, detached double garage constructed to the rear, blocking views down the fantastic garden. The couple wanted to rearrange the internal spaces, demolish the garage and extend to make the most out of their home.

The proposals were to demolish the garage, square-off the L-shaped ground floor plan and re-work the existing layout.

Now complete, the rear extension provides open-plan kitchen and dining, with increased glazing and rooflights bringing in lots of natural light. The removal of the garage provides unobstructed views over the patio and garden. Internally, the existing layout has been reworked to provide a study / snug, utility room and WC. An additional extension to the side of the house provides extra space in the form of a small gym, storage and covered outdoor area into the utility room. The roof tiles from the demolished garage have been re-used on the side extension and the majority of the existing structure left in place to reduce costs and CO2 impact.
